Five Kites
1991
Allentown, Pennsylvania

This piece was composed of two zones, with each zone investigating the phrase ”I ran across a kite” in a different way. In the downstream zone, the phrase was orderly and legible. In the upstream zone, the concrete words were more visibly disrupted and chaotically arranged. The double meaning of ”ran across,” in one sense referring to the flying of the kite, and in the other sense referring to the discovery of the kite, allowed viewers to participate in the water/air metaphor of the piece in different ways. Five Kites was commissioned by the Sculpture in the Park Committee, Allentown, PA, in May of 1991.
